Using Schwann Online

Schwann Online is an electronic edition of the classical recording catalog information of Schwann Opus and the non-classical recording information of Schwann Spectrum. It is not designed specifically as a resource for ordering musical recordings, but rather as a reference tool for music bibliographers, catalogers and enthusiasts.

Schwann Online searches and displays Schwann data by musical piece or song (title). You may choose to search by cd title, but the display is by song/piece title. Each song/piece constitutes a citation in Schwann Online, and clicking on the catalog number will bring up all citations on that particular CD or cassette.

Search Mode

Schwann Online uses a relevancy-ranking search engine to retrieve and display the results of search requests. The search engine evaluates "relevance" not only by the number of occurrences of the search words within each citation, but also on the basis of the proximity of the search words to one another and on the significance of the fields within which the words are found.

To initiate a search, the simplest approach is to enter one or more words into the Quick Search field and click the SEARCH button. (e.g. cantata, fugue, Bach, Hyperion) Searches also can be narrowed by restricting the word search to exact word matches.

Brief Citations Screen

After clicking the SEARCH button, the Brief Citation Screen appears, which provides a short list of matching citations with up to 20 items per display page. The total number of items found by the search is shown at the top of the display.

• Clicking on the TITLE will generate a Full citation.
• Clicking on the Catalog Number will search for ALL corresponding citations.

HINT: Don't be afraid to try different combinations of words and phrases. The best way to get to know the search program is to use it.

Browse Mode

The BROWSE function allows you to browse a number of fields of Schwann data. The default field is Composer. Enter the browse word in the field, select the category by clicking the appropriate radio button, and then click the BROWSE button to initiate the search. Additional items will be made "browsable" in the near future.
